Friendly Neighborhood Character Assassin

I am a white, heterosexual male.

Sidenote: I refuse to use the term “cis gender”, because it is the norm. You wouldn’t call a non handicapped person a “cis capped” person, would you?

As a kid I watched Princess Fantaghiro.

Who, surprise, surprise, is a girl/woman, who is the hero, who saves the kingdom, who saves her prince. She was tutores and guided by the white sorceress, who also posed as the white knight (the actress even was glued on a beard to make it obvious for the watcher) while teaching our heroine to fight with a sword.

As a teen I was drawn in by Deep Space Nine (DS9 for short), where the main protagonist was a black man, Commander, later Captain, Benjamin Sisko.

I also was watching (and am a huge fan of) Voyager, with Captain Catherine Janeway.

I loved the Alien movies, where the main protagonist was, as you hopefully know, a woman, Ellen Ripley.

Of course, there too 0 was classic Trek, TNG, Star Wars, Babylon 5, X-Files, MacGyver and other stuff with white male protagonists and rolemodels.

But I wanted to draw attention to the aforementioned series and movies, because they feature women and a PoC, and that I fully engaged with and idolized, ALTHOUGH I am a white, heterosexual male.

Why?

Because they did diversity right.

They didn’t set out with the goal of creating a BLACK captain, a WOMAN hero.

They set out with the most important of goals for these characters – make good characters, who happen to be [insert gender/ethnicity here].

While today’s “progressive” characters are focusing on the wrong aspect. When I see Ghostbusters 2016, new Star Wars, Discovery I get this vibe:

QUOTE

The BLACK HEROIC WOMAN protagonist steps into the sun and looks good while sweating

END QUOTE

While a good introduction to the same character would be:

QUOTE

The protagonist steps out into the sun, the sweat beads on her forehead look like diamonds on black velvet against her dark skin.

END QUOTE

That, coincidentally, is part of why I hate pride days/weeks/months/events. You’re proud of, and concentrating on, aspects people have no control over. It’s equal to “I’m proud to be balding!”

You are reducing people (or yourselves) to things that, if you were reduced to them by whitey, it would be sexist, racist, trans-, or homophobic. (Or hateful towards the pholically challenged, if you reduce me to my balding.)

Who’s the real bigot here?

So. How to write a great FEMALE character? A great BLACK character? A great TRANS character?

Write a great character. Period.

A great character who HAPPENS TO BE black, female, transgender, gay, or even bald (Michael Garibaldi, anyone?).

Do not focus on the “minority” aspect, but what makes yoir character great.

Note: If you write, for example, about a black woman overcoming adversity in the 1950s, disregard everything I said.

Also note: read the Expanse, or watch it, or Caprica. Being gay, or in a multi-person spanning relationship, is being treated as normal as “traditional” relationships, or heterosexuality. THAT is the right way.

Take care,

A.

People who…

…deserve a free surprise hysterectomy.

Pseudo-Feminists who say shit like this woman:

fb_img_1475565567775-1.jpg

Well.
All people out there who think like this, should IMMEDIATELY be taken into hospitals and sterilised, we need to ensure that these “people” never reproduce.
Ever.

Just like those people in China and India (or any place in the world in fact) who abort female fetuses, or murder female babies right after birth.

If you mistreat (or outright murder) your baby just because it has the wrong genitalia, you need to be sterilised, and the kid (if still alive) taken from you.

You are the reason why we as a species are held back. You are (part of) the problem, not the solution.
You are, in all meanings of the word, a subcreature.

Take care, and if you know anyone with such an extremely sexist stance (there is NO reverse sexism, it is sexism, plain and simple. Deal with that fact!), beat them.
Regularly.
Severely.

PS: if the individual above turns out to have been framed, I want to apologise in advance. But in this day and age extremists like that DO exist.

Who you gonna call?

Not. Me.

So the new Ghostbusters trailer finally dropped last week, after having had a trailer for the trailer (which is like an ad for an ad) and it shows us exactly what this Movie will be:
Utter crap.

Don’t get me wrong and start your feminist ramblings. I wanted to be excited about this movie, and I really didn’t give two shits about the fact they did the gender swap. Screw it, if it is written well, the all female cast is fine.
But that’s where the main problem lies. It is not written well.

It dishes out stereotypes (“sassy blackwoman”) uses unfunny comedy (“is it the wig or the hat”; did I go to the wrong trailer? Is this a scooby doo episode?), and the writing in all seems to follow the “how to write clean, politically correct, stereotypical comedy” rule book that has been floating around Hollywood for far too long.
For example, when one of them is possessed, I knew that she will get the ghost slapped out of her. Then it happens.
The ghost flies away, and here we have already established that ghosts can be seen, but I knew that she will get slapped again. Then that happens. Or when they both say “Let’s go.” and then go back and forth about it in an unfunny way.

Predictable.
Uncomfortable.
Unfunny.
Wannabe.

Again, no issue with them being women, just bad writing. Maybe a lack of chemistry.
And we get to a hint of an antagonist. “Someone is creating a device that amplifies paranormal activity…”

Fuck!
You!

If you’re looking for the best and funniest scenes in this movie, you just saw them.

If they make a sequel, I just hope it will be better written. Oh and by the way, I am seriously thinking about seeing this piece still. Why? So I can better judge it. Who knows, maybe the trailer is utter crap, and the film a hidden gem. Part of me sees this as a case of Star Wars. We all knew the prequels sucked ass, we still went to watch Episode 3.
We’ll see….take care, and keep bustin’

Culture on Deathrow

I recently saw a documentary about a rather mysagonist culture.
I won’t comment which one, but I ahve to add: It ain’t a pure chinese problem.

The dilemma of the one child policy is known and critizised plenty enough. Girls face abortion, or neglect in many cases because they cost (dowry) while boys don’t.
The other culture doesn’t have such a stupid policy. It still has a ratio of 145 boys to 100 girls born.
BORN mind you!

They neglect their girls, boys would get better medical treatment than girls, thus child mortality rate among girls is higher. When they grow up there are too many men for only a few women. The documentary even interviewed a woman who had given birth to EIGHT (!) girls, and killed all of the born children immediately, because – you guessed it – they were girls.
EIGHT healthy babies, murdered by their own mother as soon as they were born, because girls.

Although the culture in question is rich and ancient, has a lot of history predating anything we have here in the west, this current trend is a cul de sac. And I’m glad for it.

Don’t get me wrong, I am sorry for all the lost lives. For every girl born and murdered, neglected or abandonned. It hurts me.
But I am glad. This – obviously primitive – culture is on death row. They are killing off their future women, and most women from the civilised parts of the world won’t comply with that kind of crap, so their entire culture is in it’s dying twitches.
Good. No more child murder, no more child neglect, no more gendercide. The chinese have a similar problem.
Good.

I like the culture and it aches me to see them go, but if that is the cost to stop gendercide, good. Taking out your idiotic cultural and religious beliefs on infants and toddlers – your culture and religion deserve to die out.

That is all I ahve to say.

It is wrong, I am hurt on a far too personal level than I anticipated, and I’d like to bitch-slap all these people into the ground until my hands and muscles are sore, but I can’t.
So I sit back, and take comfort in the fact that these morons are actually killing off their own future, until tehy are ALL gone.
