The Digitally Dilapidated

During our stay in a four star hotel at the beautiful istrian beach, with warm, clear waters and a great view on Rovinj, I noticed something.
Parents, kids of all ages, entire families, couples, all just watching/reading shit of their phones, tablets, and in one case, a laptop even.

At breakfast, lunch, dinner, beach, pool, wherever.
“What did you see during your vacation in Coratia?”
“YouTube, Facebook and Instagram”
Fuck you.

Here, my conviction, that smartphones aren’t made for us, got it’s final veneer. Perhaps some future generation that is truly capable of multitasking might take advantage of this stuff, but it is not for us.

Instead of spending time with their families, their spouses, their parents, their siblings, their children, or just plain taking in the vistas, nature, clean air and relative silence, people are staring at their phones! Instead of getting away from the shit that they are confronted with daily at home, they take it with them EVERYWHERE, and then wonder, why they do not feel relaxed.
I had people at the hike through the Plitvica Lakes Nationalpark, looking at their phones, occasionally looking up, going “wow” snapping a crappy cellphone picture and then continue typing/reading shit.

For Fucks Sake! LIVE IN THE REAL WORLD! Not the virtual world. Converse with one another, and get more substance out of fewer connections, instead of more connections with less substance.
Moronic cancers of human (de)evolution.
Take care, and put away those fucking devices, make a scheduled “social media (half)hour” once a day, and other than that, no social media, no texts/messages. Same with news. Just calls.

World Wide Warning

An acquaintance of mine got a passive aggressive note passed to him by a stranger in the tube. A world wide warning. That the internet is evil and that you should appreciate live music, paintings in galleries and conversations in the flesh.
Bullshit.
I have a magic device in my hands as I write these lines, that allows me to listen to obscure African metal bands I could only listen to live if I invested a ludicrous amount of money (and time) to travel to some African country or another, while chatting with people on the other side of the globe and looking at paintings from the great masters, which I – again – would have to spend ludicrous amounts of money (and time) to gain access to. Carrying on my kindle an entire library worth of books, with no added weight. All while riding the metro. Or bus. Or sitting on the toilet.
Whoever thinks that only live encounters with art and people are worthwhile must lead a pretty boring (and/or expensive) lifestyle. Heading from encounter to encounter, with vast stretches of nothing in between.
Hey Mr. In-the-flesh, take your world wide warning and take it with you in your warm filthy hipster holes. I believe I have seen more than you did.

Take off the nostalgia goggles of times before you were born, those times had their shit sides too. (Coldwar, anyone?)

Take care,

Mass extinctions

You may or may not have heard about mass extinctions.

If you are from a bible humping (yes humping) part of the world, mass extinctions are a new and satanic concept to you, as everything is no older than 6000 years. If you are from that crowd still believing this – go away.

There have been a few mass extinctions in earth’s history. Caused by a multitude of things:
◆Meteorite impact, the most popular one, dinosaur killer. 😉
◆Super volcano, the misnomer, it was less a volcanic eruption, like the super pimple on earth’s face like Yellowstone, but the earth tearing open, spewing forth gas, lava, gas, soot, gas, ash and gas into the atmosphere and killing much of life through a mixture of suffocation and climate change (aka Volcanic winter).
◆Gamma Ray Burst, it is deadly lightning from space. When “nearby” a star goes nova, or shit dives into a black hole, from the poles of the nova or the blackhole, a massive blast of concentrated gamma radiation is shot out. If the earth is in the path of this highly concentrated ray – the side of the earth turned into the ray, is immediately sterilised – Pop out of a shelter or a time machine a second later, and do open heart surgery in the dirt. That sterilised!
The Ozone layer is wrecked, allowing for the sun to do in the other side of the planet.

And lastly, my favorite. The first mass extinction event ON earth, was caused by creatures FROM earth.

Tiny single cell organisms, who breathed earth’s ancient atmosphere, which lacked oxygen, exhaled just that – oxygen. They exhaled so much of that which we need to survive, that they bereft themselves of something to breathe, and they changed the climate – it got cooler due to the oxygen, and they died in massive numbers.

Now, did we ever stop to consider, that, we might be the next incarnation of this?
We can’t kill ALL life on the earth, but like those buggers back then, we would change conditions to a state where we can’t live any longer, taking most of life currently present with us into oblivion.
This planet is a self correcting system, we may or may not be a failure. Our purpose from the start may have been to act as a reset button. Clean the slate, and life starts over.
Again.

Now, we could try and avoid this, in which case we can spread out (to space!), evolve, and be one with nature. But if we don’t, nature doesn’t care.
Self correcting system. An answer to our age old question: “Why are we here?” -“Mass extinction, anal orifice!”

Take that environmentalists! You are preventing nature from self correcting! Mindless, meddling fools!

Addendum to the Hippies…

A well known theatre (actors on a stage) in my country is in dire need of renovations. To rake in donations they started an advertising campaign (with a rather unsettling image):

The woman in the picture (in others it’s a man) has no eyes, but skin stretched over the place where eyes should be. The slogan goes something like this: “Whether you want to see it, or not. No renovation. No theater. Let’s do something.”
Okay. Sad, but okay.

So far, so good.

Then someone took a sharpie (or edding) and wrote on the forehead of the woman on the ad the following

“So much injustice…
so many wars…so much lunacy…
whom is caring for theatre then?”

I know it isn’t supposed to say “whom” but I wanted to carry the grammatical error over from german, and this is the best I could come up with. So that would be issue number one with that graffity.

Number 2: Injustice? Wars? Lunacy? That’s business as usual you numbskull!
We need theatre (and it’s successors “Movies”, “TV”, “Gaming”, “Internet”) as a form of escapism. I’d rather live in a world with injustice, wars and lunacy that has these escapsims in it, than a world with absolute peace, equality and sense that has NO (performing) arts!

Theatre (and it’s successors) not only provide relief from the world we have to endure, but also serve as a projection of our dreams. Even IF we were to have peace, equality and sanity in the world, all of the world, we still have dreams, dreams that can’t be fulfilled.
For example: No magic, no starships (yet), so we need a projector.

We need and want drama, we need it to satisfy our basic emotional responses. We want it in order to feel empathy.
To remind us why we are doing what we are doing. In that perfect world this hippy scribbler indirectly demands, we will soon suffer from a lack of empathy, as there is no suffering, thus we become indifferent.
That’s were drama comes in.
In the world we live in right now, we need drama to remind us that there are solutions to things. To hone our empathy, and transport that empathy from the play (etc.) out into the real world.

Theatre (and so on) satisfies our need for human interaction, even if we are a social introvert, we are still hardwired to NEED it, and this is a basic need served. An introvert who can’t speak to people, still can feel (empathy wise) the entire emotionrange due to these projections.

So you god damn hippy, we need theatre (and so on), as escapism, as honing for our empathy, as distraction, as levitation, as projection. We need to dream, to hope, to aim, to reflect, to think, but also to shut down our mind and let things unfold without us interfering.
For thousands of years there was theatre as entertainment in one way or another.
Denying that it is a basic human need to entertain and be entertained, is even more crippling to society and our development, than injustice, wars and lunacy together.

With that said, here the stumbling block:
