Friendly Neighborhood Character Assassin

I am a white, heterosexual male.

Sidenote: I refuse to use the term “cis gender”, because it is the norm. You wouldn’t call a non handicapped person a “cis capped” person, would you?

As a kid I watched Princess Fantaghiro.

Who, surprise, surprise, is a girl/woman, who is the hero, who saves the kingdom, who saves her prince. She was tutores and guided by the white sorceress, who also posed as the white knight (the actress even was glued on a beard to make it obvious for the watcher) while teaching our heroine to fight with a sword.

As a teen I was drawn in by Deep Space Nine (DS9 for short), where the main protagonist was a black man, Commander, later Captain, Benjamin Sisko.

I also was watching (and am a huge fan of) Voyager, with Captain Catherine Janeway.

I loved the Alien movies, where the main protagonist was, as you hopefully know, a woman, Ellen Ripley.

Of course, there too 0 was classic Trek, TNG, Star Wars, Babylon 5, X-Files, MacGyver and other stuff with white male protagonists and rolemodels.

But I wanted to draw attention to the aforementioned series and movies, because they feature women and a PoC, and that I fully engaged with and idolized, ALTHOUGH I am a white, heterosexual male.

Why?

Because they did diversity right.

They didn’t set out with the goal of creating a BLACK captain, a WOMAN hero.

They set out with the most important of goals for these characters – make good characters, who happen to be [insert gender/ethnicity here].

While today’s “progressive” characters are focusing on the wrong aspect. When I see Ghostbusters 2016, new Star Wars, Discovery I get this vibe:

QUOTE

The BLACK HEROIC WOMAN protagonist steps into the sun and looks good while sweating

END QUOTE

While a good introduction to the same character would be:

QUOTE

The protagonist steps out into the sun, the sweat beads on her forehead look like diamonds on black velvet against her dark skin.

END QUOTE

That, coincidentally, is part of why I hate pride days/weeks/months/events. You’re proud of, and concentrating on, aspects people have no control over. It’s equal to “I’m proud to be balding!”

You are reducing people (or yourselves) to things that, if you were reduced to them by whitey, it would be sexist, racist, trans-, or homophobic. (Or hateful towards the pholically challenged, if you reduce me to my balding.)

Who’s the real bigot here?

So. How to write a great FEMALE character? A great BLACK character? A great TRANS character?

Write a great character. Period.

A great character who HAPPENS TO BE black, female, transgender, gay, or even bald (Michael Garibaldi, anyone?).

Do not focus on the “minority” aspect, but what makes yoir character great.

Note: If you write, for example, about a black woman overcoming adversity in the 1950s, disregard everything I said.

Also note: read the Expanse, or watch it, or Caprica. Being gay, or in a multi-person spanning relationship, is being treated as normal as “traditional” relationships, or heterosexuality. THAT is the right way.

Take care,

A.

Hope

“I’ve found that evil usually triumphs – unless good is very, very careful.” – Dr. McCoy

I attempted to read an article by some online magazine or another but after barely the first paragraph I had to stop it.

Why?

Hope.

The author was talking about ‘hope’. That movie they had watched, was so outstanding and wonderful because it offered ‘hope’.

Fuck your hope.
Fuck your movies.

Have you seen the murk that Hollywood spews at us?
It is a hope cumshot!
Good guys save the day, evil is vanquished again. Hope for everyone!
Bullshit.

I just HOPE that reality comes a knockin’ and kicks you in the shins.
Take off your SJW-false-priorities goggles, and look around you:

This is the victory march of evil.

Not the tame, clearcut, darth vader evil. No, the diffuse, hard to grasp evil of reality.
This evil once led us down the path of darkness (Holocaust), and it will again, this time on a much larger (global) scale:

Trump is president.
UK is leaving the EU.
Climate change deniers are in control.
Right wing assholes are gaining power everywhere.
Leftist libtards are denying basic science (don’t you dare try and hide your antivaxxer movement!).
Climate change is happening all around us.
Globally the gears are turning towards more hatred, less tolerance, towards war, away from peace, towards total control by the free market, away from government rules and guidelines.

We are turning our societies into the shit versions of dystopian nightmares.

All the while, you idiots are just talking about hope, instead of creating the basis for it.
{You sacks of fecal matter are only protesting immediately-bad things, but let the in-the-long-term-bad things slip you by (if you even notice them).}

I’ll quote from Star Trek again: “I’ve found that evil usually triumphs – unless good is very, very careful.”

Be careful.

Back to the Future II (Welcome Marty!)

This is another irregular post, because today is the day.

Oct 21 2015

All too often people say “Where’s our Hoverboard?” or the flying cars. See, BttFII was a scifi movie, and all too often their predictions about the future are plain wrong.
Or we use the wrong “filter”.

SciFi is not always upfront with their messages, and their warnings. You just have to use the right filter, I think BttFII was spot on.

•Take the self lacing shoes – a message of not only convenience, but a warning of lazyness. There are motorized shoppingcarts. Okay? We don’t need selflacing shoes, we have people so fat and lazy they need a motorized shopping cart! Amazon delivery drones – is anybody home????

•”Jaws 19″ – well, do I even HAVE to rant about “Movies these days are only sequels/prequels/retellings/reimagenings/alternate universe/backstory/adaptations from books/shortstories/comics/manga/anime/cartoons/urban legends….” No? Good. Jaws 19 is a metaphor for this development. We may not have 19 sequels to Jaws, but it sure feels like it. Star Wars 7, with spin offs in planing and production, the entire Marvel crap, the n-th incarnation of Batman, Superman Spiderman and X-Men, and so fracking on.
Jaws 19, folks. Jaws 19! (Let us not touch 3D and its shittines)

•A fax machine in every corner of the house – a screen in every corner/pocket connected to the net. I have a smartphone, a tablet, a laptop, a netbook, my wife has a smartphone, a tablet, a notebook and we have a huge ass TV. People are online ALL DAMN DAY! You may not get fired through your smartphone, but because of actions taken on it (facebook post dissing your boss, and BAM you’re fired. f.e.)

•Tech obsession with multiple TV Channels and personal gadgets as well as handsfree gaming – uuuhm…see above’s paragraph for details…

•DeHydrated Pizza – It is not so much the Pizza in and of itself that is spot on, but our addiction to easy access, pre-made junk food. Microwave Popcorn and other such foods, instant ramen, bread you bake for ten minutes and you have a loaf of bread? Are you kidding? BttFII was dead on.

Of course there was other stuff they were right about, and some they were wrong about. But these are the things that people rant about the most.
So, yeah, welcome Marty, please turn things right in the past.

Good luck, and as always,
Take care,
A.

Addendum to the Hippies…

A well known theatre (actors on a stage) in my country is in dire need of renovations. To rake in donations they started an advertising campaign (with a rather unsettling image):

The woman in the picture (in others it’s a man) has no eyes, but skin stretched over the place where eyes should be. The slogan goes something like this: “Whether you want to see it, or not. No renovation. No theater. Let’s do something.”
Okay. Sad, but okay.

So far, so good.

Then someone took a sharpie (or edding) and wrote on the forehead of the woman on the ad the following

“So much injustice…
so many wars…so much lunacy…
whom is caring for theatre then?”

I know it isn’t supposed to say “whom” but I wanted to carry the grammatical error over from german, and this is the best I could come up with. So that would be issue number one with that graffity.

Number 2: Injustice? Wars? Lunacy? That’s business as usual you numbskull!
We need theatre (and it’s successors “Movies”, “TV”, “Gaming”, “Internet”) as a form of escapism. I’d rather live in a world with injustice, wars and lunacy that has these escapsims in it, than a world with absolute peace, equality and sense that has NO (performing) arts!

Theatre (and it’s successors) not only provide relief from the world we have to endure, but also serve as a projection of our dreams. Even IF we were to have peace, equality and sanity in the world, all of the world, we still have dreams, dreams that can’t be fulfilled.
For example: No magic, no starships (yet), so we need a projector.

We need and want drama, we need it to satisfy our basic emotional responses. We want it in order to feel empathy.
To remind us why we are doing what we are doing. In that perfect world this hippy scribbler indirectly demands, we will soon suffer from a lack of empathy, as there is no suffering, thus we become indifferent.
That’s were drama comes in.
In the world we live in right now, we need drama to remind us that there are solutions to things. To hone our empathy, and transport that empathy from the play (etc.) out into the real world.

Theatre (and so on) satisfies our need for human interaction, even if we are a social introvert, we are still hardwired to NEED it, and this is a basic need served. An introvert who can’t speak to people, still can feel (empathy wise) the entire emotionrange due to these projections.

So you god damn hippy, we need theatre (and so on), as escapism, as honing for our empathy, as distraction, as levitation, as projection. We need to dream, to hope, to aim, to reflect, to think, but also to shut down our mind and let things unfold without us interfering.
For thousands of years there was theatre as entertainment in one way or another.
Denying that it is a basic human need to entertain and be entertained, is even more crippling to society and our development, than injustice, wars and lunacy together.

With that said, here the stumbling block:

CreepyTake care, peace

Young Adult crap…

…I kow I’m going to make anything but friends with this, but I need to get this out of my system…publicly.

Enough with this “Young Adult” garbage!

Enough with the mostly terrible books, and the almost entirely unstandable film adaptations. Yes, I’m looking at you Twilight crowd, and you Hunger-Games people.

First off, there is NO such thing as a young adult. There are teenagers (Kids basically) and then there are twens (adults). The former are anything BUT adults, and the other are not “young” per se. These movies are made for the tiny margin of people between 18 and 21. Kids who achieved adulthood by not dying, and who aren’t old enough to drink hard liqor in some backwater countries around the globe.

In short, a group of people in desperate need of rolemodels.

I’m all in favor of empowering women, and giving teenagers in general a healthy attitude, but these books and films are (mostly) crap! When I was a kid and a teen and a “young adult”, I was watching MacGyver, Star Trek and James Bond. Those were my rolemodels. Not a teen my age who had more experience than Bond, more brains than MacGyver and Spock combined and more chicks / guys lusting after them than Captain Kirk!

Not only are these characters two dimensional superhero cutouts, empowered with the might and knowledge of an adult writer, in most cases the premise of the scenarios themselves are crap too! Yes. Here comes the Hunger Games Crowd: A society that has the technology and resources to create these idiotic games and setups and surveilance and traps, has the technology/power to FEED FRAKING EVERYONE and have enough for exports! The whole premise is not dystopian but idiotic.

Kids, get GROWN rolemodels. I admit there is a certain lack of adequate female rolemodels out there (at least im comparison with MacGyver, Kirk and Bond), but still, girls, look to WOMEN for guidance, not girls.

You don’t want to be a sixteen year old (that sounds like a fourty something wrote his dialogue) – sixteen is a stupid age. With sixteen you’re full of shit and you have no idea that you are. (If you are in that age range and you disagree, wait ten years and then come talking to me.) As an adult you are full of shit, and you are painfully aware of it. Which makes you a complete person.

If boys wanted to be boys, and girls wanted to be girls, when would they transform into adults? Right, never. At least if they had any say in it. Boys become men, girls become women.
Adjust your rolemodels and ditch the idiotic “Young Adult” concepts.

It is, amongst other things, these crappy “Young Adult” nonsense flicks that distort young people’s view on the world. They feel that they are entitled to stuff. Which they aren’t.

Bring back coming of age flicks, in which a full-of-shit-and-unaware-of-it character slowly realises the ugly truth about him/herself and of the world. Bring (back) adult rolemodels for boys and girls, by showing them men and women who are all they want (and need) to be.

In that respect, take care, especially you young reader, especially you.
